Welcome August! It's time to celebrate August's birthstone, Peridot. This beautiful gemstone sometimes called the extreme gem. Some of them journeyed to Earth on meteorites. Some are found in exotic locations like Peridot Beach, Hawaii where the sands shimmer with a luminous green color.
Peridot is a yellowish-green variety of the mineral olivine and gets its lovely green hue from the presence of iron. Since volcanic rocks are rich in iron and magnesium (two essential elements needed to created peridot), hardened lava flows are rich sources for peridot.
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that exists in only one color but the shades span from pale green to olive green and bright lime.
