| ‘Black Is King’ Trailer: Beyoncé Makes Her Disney+ Debut with New Visual Album - IndieWire Posted: 28 Jun 2020 12:00 AM PDT  Queen Bey is coming to Disney+. The streamer has dropped a powerful first trailer for a surprise new visual album written and directed by Beyoncé, titled "Black Is King." Beyoncé's first directorial effort since the 2019 Netflix documentary film "Homecoming," "Black Is King" will premiere globally on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, and will arrive on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the release of Disney's "The Lion King." Watch the trailer below. This visual album, Beyoncé's first since the groundbreaking "Lemonade" shook up the world in 2016, reimagines the themes of "The Lion King" for young kids today, and features diverse cast and crew. According to Disney, the film was in production for a year. Here's the story, according to the film's official synopsis: "The voyages of Black families, throughout time, are honored in a tale about a young king's transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father's teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne. These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power. 'Black Is King' is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence." "Black Is King" is based on the music of "The Lion King: The Gift," the curated album Beyoncé released in conjunction with voicing Nala in Jon Favreau's photorealistic CGI-animated remake released last summer. "Black Is King" will feature artists and guests from that album, which included Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Tierra Whack, 070 Shake, and Jessie Reyez. Segments included in the film include videos titled "My Power," "Mood 4 Eva," and "Brown Skin Girl." The singer's mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, came out firing after several people on social media criticized Beyonce for her upcoming visual album "Black is King," claiming she's trying to capitalize on African culture. "There's way, way more involved in the making of Black Is King but my point in posting this is simply that those who are criticizing the film (before they even see it) saying it's unauthentic, upset that B doesn't actually go to Africa or say that Bey is simply using African cultures for gain are wrong because 1. She makes less with her Afrocentric content. 2. She's actually taken the time studied African costumes and such and didn't just throw this together. She's worked with actual African dancers, film makers, directors etc on this project so for some African Americans and Africans to say it's a facade is truly discrediting the work of their own people," Tina wrote in a lengthy post. Continues Tina, "While people whine about her not touring in Africa yet beg for more African representation in entertainment but are mad that they're getting it from one the world's greatest stars is strange to me. They'd rather have B come and they spend their money for a show once or twice every few years rather than have someone of African descent work with African creatives to create art that celebrates them that will last forever and it be done at no cost to them.)" Police told reporters her 4-year-old son Josey was found alone and sleeping on the pontoon boat he'd been in with his mom. Josey said they'd been in the water earlier that day but she had not managed to get back in the boat, according to reports. On Saturday, a tweet from ABC producer Anastasia Williams indicated that Rivera's family was staying by the water as authorities, having presumed the star dead, searched for her remains. "@VENTURASHERIFF told press that this man and woman are Naya's mother and brother," the tweet read. "Her mother is kneeling on the dock with her arms outstretched towards the water." Speaking to People, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office confirmed that relatives of the actress had been at the site of Rivera's disappearance. "Naya's mother and brother have been at the lake every day since Naya disappeared," a source told the magazine. "They have been in constant contact with the Sheriff's Office and involved in the search. On Saturday morning, they joined the search on a sheriff's boat." Authorities in Ventura County have been sharing updates on social media, including footage from their sonar search that shows how muddy and difficult to see it is at the bottom of the lake. Rivera's son Josey, whom she shared with her ex-husband Ryan Dorsey, was reportedly "in good health" when he was found. He was later reunited with relatives including his dad. Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Kevin Donoghue has said his team does not suspect foul play, nor do they believe Rivera committed suicide. The episodes usually last for a few weeks and then things go back to normal. Kim hopes it will be the same this time."
